Join thousands of people around the world for the 7-day dairy-free challenge.
World Plant Milk Day is an international day to celebrate plant-based alternatives to dairy milk. This campaign attracts millions of people around the world, aiming to accelerate the transition from dairy milk to the rich variety of plant-based alternatives
Plant milk alternatives have greatly increased in popularity, currently accounting for around 8% of the UK’s total “milk” sales. From soy to oat, to cashew, to hemp; the diversity of vegan milks continues to grow in tandem with the global shift towards plant-based eating – a market predicted to be worth $74.2 billion by 2027.
Why should we switch to plant-based milks?
Nutrition
Cow’s milk contains high levels of vitamins and minerals, such as calcium which is essential for growth and development. However, it contains a high amount of saturated fats and natural free sugars. In comparison, plant-based alternatives tend to be much lower in saturated fats and are fortified with various nutrients such as vitamin D and B12.
Furthermore, a large proportion of the world’s population is intolerant to cow’s milk yet continue to drink it, negatively impacting their gut microbiome and experiencing digestive issues and discomfort.
Environment
Rearing cattle is well known as being one of the worst agricultural practices for the environment, contributing greatly to the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, cows emit a huge amount of methane as a biproduct of digestion; a gas 30x more potent than CO2 at trapping heat into the Earth’s atmosphere. In comparison, plant-based milks generally have a lower ecological footprint when compared to traditional dairy, requiring significantly less land, water, and other resources, and producing far fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
